Frequently Asked Questions

Can you really change your brain?

Yes! Over 30 years of brain SPECT imaging work and clinical practice at Amen Clinics has proven that the brain can change, and that changing your brain can change your life! With a better brain always comes a better life.

Do I need to be a doctor or scientist to understand the material in this course?

No! None of the material in this course is hard to learn. It is designed to be fun, informative, and practical. You can take what you learn and start implementing it in your life today!

What are some of the things that are most harmful to brain health and mental health?

Our brain imaging work at Amen Clinics shows that even mild Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) can ruin your life. Head injuries are a major cause of psychiatric illness, but few people know it. Research shows that TBIs and concussions increase the risk of:

· Depression

· Anxiety and panic disorders

· Drug and alcohol use

· Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

· Psychosis

· Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

· Aggression

· Dementia

· Suicide

What causes head injuries?

Common causes of head injuries include:

· Falls—falling out of bed, slipping in the bath or shower, falling down steps, falling off ladders

· Motor vehicle-related collisions—involving cars, motorcycles, or bicycles; also, pedestrians involved in accidents

· Violence—caused by gunshot wounds, assaults, domestic violence, or child abuse

· Sports injuries—besides football, they are common in soccer, boxing, baseball, lacrosse, skateboarding, hockey, cycling, basketball, cheerleading and other high-impact or extreme sports

· Explosive blasts and other combat injuries

What does the brain have to do with relationship issues?

At Amen Clinics, the brain SPECT scans of couples who have relationship difficulties show that many have unresolved brain issues. The conditions that surface in a scan include ADD/ADHD, depression, OCD, anxiety, anger, brain toxicity, and more. Any of these issues can have a negative impact on relationships. Treating the underlying condition is critical to improving the relationship.

How do brain issues affect weight?

Having trouble reaching or maintaining a healthy weight is a sign of trouble in the brain. If you want to achieve a healthy weight, the first place to start is optimizing your brain. Until the brain is optimized, it will be difficult to stick with a healthy eating plan.

Like ADD, anxiety, depression and addictions, the brains of our overweight and obese patients clearly do not show one pattern in the brain. Based on our brain imaging work, Amen Clinics has identified 5 different types of overeaters:

1. Compulsive – always think about food (low serotonin)

2. Impulsive – poor impulse control (low dopamine)

3. Impulsive-Compulsive (low serotonin and dopamine)

4. Sad – associated with mood issues (low dopamine)

5. Anxious – associated with anxiety (low Gamma Aminobutyric Acid—GABA)
